Our Committees

Members of the League of Professional Theatre Women are encouraged to join committees on a volunteer basis to help further the League’s mission. Below you will find a list of currently active committees. Members of the League may also propose a committee they are interested in chairing to the Co-Presidents. For any questions on joining an existing committee or how a committee operates, please contact us.

Membership

The membership committee looks at the issues of how best to serve our membership, exploring new member activities and other ideas that can make the membership more proactive, connected and valuable to each of our members and to the larger theatre industry as a whole. Committee work also includes ways to expand membership, retain current members and draw back lapsed members as we grow and become a more modern organization. The committee convenes monthly on zoom and in the interim, by email, vets applicants seeking to join according to the criteria for membership in the League.

Discipline Roundtables

Formerly called the Circles by Discipline, these are self-directed gatherings by your discipline(s) to discuss relevant topics, work on related material or just chat as each roundtable sees fit and wishes to manage their roundtable.  Click here to join existing roundtables (or create new ones!)

Julia's Reading Room Committee

Julia’s Reading Room, developed by Julia Miles, founder of the Women’s Project New York City, provides the unique opportunity for any League member to hear and observe their early work read by professional actors for the purpose of further development. The readings take place in a friendly informal living room environment in front of a small, supportive, invited audience, with discussion.

Travel Committee

The Travel Committee, formed in 1996, plans International and Domestic theatrical trips that are complemented with an educational and cultural value. It is open to all LPTW members and International Affiliates. Non-Members and guests are welcome but must pay an additional $50 Non-Member fee.

Programming

The Programming Committee is directly responsible to produce the programming events, which are the Season Launch, the Twelfth Night Party, the Lucille Lortel Award(s), and the Annual Meeting. All other award events are produced by a membership leader and are assisted by volunteers and a programming point person.

PROGRAMMING EVENTS:

  1. Season Launch
  2. Twelfth Night
  3. Annual Meeting

EVENTS EXTERNAL WITH PUBLIC:

These award events require a single point of authority producing the respective event from the membership, with the assistance of programming, and volunteers from membership.

  1. Theatre Women Awards Committee
TWA nominates recipients for the following awards: The Lee Reynolds Award, The Ruth Morley Designing Women Award, The Lifetime Achievement Award, and The Josephine Abady Award.
  2. Gilder/Coigney International Theatre Award Committee
The GCITA was established in 2011 in honor of Rosamond Gilder and Martha Coigney, two legendary theatre women whose work on the international stage proved that theatre knows no boundaries. Presented every three years, this award acknowledges the exceptional work of theatre women around the world and aims to make a difference in the life and career of an international woman theatre artist. The award is given once every three years. This awards committee is overseen by the International Committee and reports to it.
  3. LPTW Lucille Lortel Grant Committee
The Lucille Lortel Committee nominates and follows the work of aspiring women and woman identified theatre artists who show creative promise and deserve recognition and encouragement. Each year, the committee chooses one of these artists to receive the Lortel Award. Some years the committee selects an additional Visionary Award recipient, given to a theatre woman who encourages and empowers the community and industry. Any League member may recommend a woman or woman identified individual who is deserving of consideration for either of these awards.
  4. LPTW Rachel Crothers Leadership Award® Committee
The LPTW Rachel Crothers Leadership Award® is given to a theatre woman who has made major contributions to the American theatre and who has distinguished herself in exemplary service and sacrifice for a cause that betters society and the world.
  5. Heritage Committee
The Heritage Committee develops, researches and presents a series of programs celebrating the legacy of theatre women from the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The overall objective is to bring together historical scholarship on the people, circumstances and societal forces that shaped the modern era, along with a performance element that allows the voices of these innovative figures to be heard again by modern audiences. We encourage our members who are actresses, directors, dramaturges and theatre historians to become involved in the development of future programs.
  6. Women Stage the World
This committee’s major event is the annual Women Stage the World parade through Times Square and the Theatre District, which takes place each June.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility

This committee works to expand the League’s internal focus about EDIA and to assist the organization's reach to the many communities we seek to be participants in the League.
